Frühjahrsputz und Vorfreude / Spring Cleaning and Excitement

***
When I opened the letterbox today I found an unusually soft and red envelope, without any sign of the sender. And this is what was inside:

***
In times of global terror warnings and world crises several thoughts shot through my head until I saw the small print on the balloon, took all my courage and blew into it.

Ein Einladung zum 40. Geburtstag!

An invitation for a 40th birthday celebration. Which is unusual because this year I have several invitations for 50th birthday celebrations only.

Dear B., thank for the lovely invitation!

Willkommen / Welcome

... my new blog readers and visitors. I will be able to write more eventually, promised!

***

It's hard to find words at the moment.

Last Tuesday, the word "confidence" came into my mind and it was something I felt on that day. Slightly, but still there.

It's my mother's birthday today. I wish her confidence, more than anything else.

Willkommen auf Krücken / Welcome Back on Crutches

***
In a couple of hours, my daughter is coming back from her school trip. On crutches. She has had an injured foot since the second night when she tried to escape her bunk bed quietly in order to go to the toilet.

That was the end of skiing and she had to stay indoors for the rest of the week. We will see the orthopedist early Monday morning.

I have baked a cake as a welcome present so that she will get strong and we don't have to carry her up and down the stairs.

Sonntag Morgen / Sunday Morning

It's still dark outside, quiet and raining. It's only 6.30 am.

Last night I took my parents to the airport, they should have arrived in Egypt by now. We all cried at the parking lot. I miss them already but I hope that they are going to find some peace in the next two weeks.

About an hour ago I took my daughter to her school, she has gone skiing to Switzerland with her class. She's probably going to have lots of fun.

And I? I'm going to do some more sports again, knit, talk to my brother, go to work and cling to DH.

Neue Strickjacke / New Cardigan

***
Finally! I've finished knitting my red cardigan. There was enough time to do so and while knitting I watched biathlon, the slalom races, super g, ski jumping, speed skating etc. Unfortunately I have not even watched ice hockey once, it's far too early in the morning.
.
However, should the Czechs reach the semifinals or even finals I will definitely get up at 4 or 5 in the morning!
.
.
Zum Schluß widme ich meinem Bruder dieses Foto: HOFFNUNG.

I'll dedicate the following photo to my brother: HOPE.

Langer Spaziergang / Long Walk

***
This picture has been taken in January 2009 but it looked quite similar during our long walk through the same woods today. I had asked my parents to join us because my mother had been in a really awful state in the past days. We walked for more than two hours and it felt good to be outside and breathe some fresh air.

Achterbahn / Roller Coaster

.

I'm on an emotional roller coaster: it's up in the air all of the sudden (these are the good minutes) and then it's down in the dumps in the next second. On Monday, it had been three weeks and I had the feeling that everything was very fresh and my body one single gushing wound.

Slowly, I'm beginning to take part in a social life again: I met my friend Miss Canada Dry last week and this Friday I'm going out for a meal with some colleagues. I'd like to thank my colleagues anyway because they are very thoughtful and always note when and if there's something to say or not. They make me laugh and understand that my eyes are full of tears in the next moment.

I feel a need to show the following picture: my little brother.

Stille / Silence

11.11.2008

.
Ich vermisse dich.
***
There's not much to tell. I try not to despair. The weekends are awful.

I watched a football match tonight and searched for Dany with my eyes. He used to lie on the carpet in front of the couch.

I miss you.

Kuchen und Socken / Cake and Socks

There's not much to say. I cry my eyes out, I go to work, I sleep, I eat, I drink. Nothing else.

In the evenings I take a bath or knit and watch TV in order to give my mind a little rest. Nothing else.

Tomorrow we will go to his flat for a last time, some of the kitchen cupboards and the laminate floor will have to be removed. I hope I'll never have to see this house again once we're done.

41 Rosen von unserer Familie / 41 roses from our family

von seinen Arbeitskollegen / from his colleagues

Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
They say Spain is pretty though I've never been
Well Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen
Oh and he should know, he's been there enough
Lord I miss Daniel, oh I miss him so much
Daniel my brother you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal
Your eyes have died but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky
Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
Oh God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes

My brother's name is Daniel.

He was born on 8.10.1968, I was 8 years old at that time. The night he was born, my parents drove to the hospital and left me a note on the kitchen board. I remember that my father and I went to stand under the window of the hospital (visitors were not allowed at all hours) and then my mother told me that his name is Daniel.

Dany to all family members.

I did not like that name when my mum and dad chose it because it was very unusual in the CR during that time. I also remember that I was very happy about his unusual name afterwards.

We were close and we were far apart, most of the times due to our age difference. I used to hate him when I was 13 and 14 and my mother forced me to take him with me so that I would not go out with boys and do something my mother would not have liked me to do (needless to say that I did it anyway).

When I was 17, 18 and with my first serious boyfriend JR, we used to take Dany everywhere. He was so much fun to be with and he loved having a big sister who could drive a car.

Later, when he was 15, I remeber driving him somewhere and he said: I'm in puberty. It must have been a strange time for him and I love him for telling me.

Later, we were not always close but one thing was always the same: whenever he met a new girlfriend, one he was seriously in love with, he brought her to see me, almost immediately. That is why I know all of his three girlfriends well. His relationships were not happy, especially the last one, that ended a couple of years ago.

When Dany and his last girlfriend separated, they still lived close to eachother because of their dog Leica. Dany loved this dog to pieces. It broke his heart when his ex girlfriend and Leica moved to another town about a year ago. He was never the same happy man afterwards and we were not able to talk about Leica without him telling us not to mention her name.

We saw him frequently, sometimes twice or three times a month, sometimes only once in two months. When he came to see us, he came for breakfast and we then played cards or the game Risk which we had bought especially for him. He liked DH and DH liked him.

This morning, I broke down when I realised that he had been dead already last Sunday. We were already asking ourselves how he was doing and knew that my mum had already tried to reach him.

It will be one week tomorrow since we have found him and I simply can't recall what we have been doing all week. Time has gone so fast and I truly hate time for that. I want time to stop.

* 8.10.1968 + 23.1.2010

***

We saw you today. You looked different: a thin face, longer hair, you had a beard. The skin was yours. Your birth mark. Your lips.
.
We have given you a photo of your beloved Leica. Leica with our father. So that you won't be lonesome. So that you can hear and enjoy her barking.
.
We were in your flat and cleaned it, we have thought of you.
.
We had some food afterwards and drank some red wine and we thought of you.
.
We try not to ask any questions. We know that you knew how much we love you. We know that you knew that you can ask for our help any time.

W.H. Auden

Er war mir Nord, mir Süd, mir Ost und West;

Des Sonntags Ruh' und der Woche Streß

Mein Tag, mein Gesang, meine Rede, meine Nacht.

Ich dachte, Liebe währet ewig - falsch gedacht.

Sterne sind jetzt unerwünscht, will nichts sehn davon,

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,

Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,

Silence the pianos and with muffled drum

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead

Scribbling on the sky the message

He Is Dead,

Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,

Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,

My working week and my Sunday rest,

My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;

Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;

Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.

For nothing now can ever come to any good.

I have lost my brother. He died last weekend, at the age of 41. The police, DH and I have found him dead in his appartment on Monday evening.

I'm making small steps, step by step, I cannot look ahead and I don't know what is going to happen tomorrow.

My parents are devastated and we hold eachother, we talk, we cry and we try to live through this together.

Kochen für Faule / Cooking for Lazy People

***
This is the title of a cooking book my daughter had received from my parents for Christmas. It containers very good and simple recipes and we have encouraged my daughter to pick a recipe and cook our meal on every Sunday that she spends with us, as she is not always satisfied with our proposals - too many vegetables, far too healthy, no meat.
.
For today, she picked a meat loaf with gorgonzola cheese with mashed potatoes and a wonderful dessert consisting of plain chocolate, cream and peanut brittle. The meat loaf was delicious but my daughter could not get used to the flavour of gorgonzola. The dessert was fantastic and we were unable to finish it - with the exception of DH of course.
.
Thank you my dear for the making the meat loaf and the dessert all on your own - it was really yummy! I'm looking forward to next Sunday.
