Es gibt sie noch! / They Still Exist!

Und ich dachte, die Paternoster wären schon ausgestorben. In der IHK in Köln gibt es noch dieses schöne Exemplar. Ich  musste in die 5. Etage und das Ding fuhr nur bis zur 4., also habe ich die "Umdrehung" unfreiwillig mitgenommen. Aufregend!

Im Dortmunder Rathaus war früher auch ein Paternoster, ein pures Vergnügen für uns Kinder.

And I thought that they had disappeared. This one is still going strong at the Chamber of Commerce in Cologne. I needed to go to the 5th floor but it went to the 4th only and I had to go through the "turn" involuntarily. Exciting! 

The town hall of Dortmund used to have a paternoster as well, quite exciting for us kids. 

Was wäre Köln ohne einen kurzen Abstecher bei Maschenkunst ((Wollgeschäft)? Davon bald mehr.

Ablenkung / Distraction

Ich wusste bis kurz vor dem Abend nicht, ob ich nach Köln mitfahren wollte oder nicht. Wir hatten uns seit Monaten auf das Konzert gefreut. Und dann sind wir gefahren und ich habe es nicht bereut, denn es war ziemlich schön und hat mich für ein paar Stunden vergessen lassen.

I didn't know whether I wanted to go to Cologne or not. We had been looking forward to this concert for months. In the end, we did go and I didn't regret it because it was really good and made me forget for a couple of hours. 

Man sieht nichts, aber ist die Halle nicht wunderschön? / You don't see anything but isn't the hall wonderful?

Düsseldorf und Köln an einem Wochenende / Düsseldorf and Cologne on One Weekend

Wie schon erwähnt, haben wir unserem amerikanischen Gast am vergangenen Wochenende etwas von Düsseldorf und Köln gezeigt.

Da sich unser Gast sehr für Automobile interessiert, gingen wir in Düsseldorf in das "Classic Remise", ein ehemaliger Ringlokschuppen der Deutschen Bahn.

Für mich standen weniger die Autos im Vordergrund als das historische Gebäude.

As our guest is very interested in automobiles, we took him into the "Classic Remise" in Düsseldorf, a former roundhouse for locomotives of the German Railway.

Wer erinnert sich? Das war im April 2009, in Frankfurt, auf der Hochzeit eines unserer "bunnies".

Am Donnerstag Abend kam J.Rabbit (2. von links) aus Wales zu Besuch und am Freitag haben wir uns mit drei weiteren Freundinnen in Köln getrofffen (3. und 4. von links und die Braut, die hier nicht auf dem Foto ist). Es war ein schöner Tag, der aus einem ausgedehnten Shopping-Teil und einem Nachmittag im Café Bastian's bestand.

Und nun, fast 3,5 Jahre später, waren auf einmal 4 Kinder dabei.

Do you remember? This was in April 2009, in Frankfurt, at the wedding of one of our "bunnies".

On Thursday, J.Rabbit (2nd from left) came to visit from Wales and on Friday we met up with three other girl friends in Cologne (3rd and 4th from left and the bride, who is not on the above photo). It was a great day, consisting of an extended shopping session and a nice afternoon at the café Bastian's.

And now, nearly 3,5 years later, there were 4 children with us.

Ein wunderschöner Tag in Köln / A wonderful day in Cologne

Ich habe heute den ganzen Tag mit meiner Freundin Nightglow in Köln verbracht. Wir haben bei der Gelegenheit auch ein ganz besonderes Baby besucht, welches erst vor wenigen Tagen geboren wurde, nämlich am 24.7., und dessen Name die folgende Abkürzung ergibt: BVB.

I have spent the whole day in Cologne today, together with my friend Nightglow. On this occasion we have visited a very special baby who was born only a couple of days ago, on the 24th July and whose name forms the following short form: BVB.

Wir begannen den Tag glücklich und entspannt in Danielas Wollgeschäft Maschenkunst. So viel Herrlichkeit auf einmal (in Dortmund gibt es nur Wollgeschäfte mit Lana Grossa, das ist auf Dauer furchtbar langweilig). Natürlich habe ich Wolle gekauft, die zeige ich später.

We began the day happy and relaxed in Daniela's yarnshop Maschenkunst. All this wonderful yarn in one place (in Dortmund we have only yarn shops with Lana Grossa which has become quite boring by now). Of course I bought some new yarn, I'll show that later.

Dann folgte ein spätes Frühstück bei Bastians. / Then followed a late breakfast at Bastians.


Und dann ging es zur Familie BVB. Selten habe ich so ein entspanntes Ehepaar mit ihrem Baby gesehen, dieser Besuch hat mir so viel Freude bereitet.

And then we went off to see the family BVB. I have seldom seen such a relaxed couple with their baby, this visit made me very happy.

Am Ende des Tages habe ich noch ein Geschenk für DH und für mich gekauft und dann waren wir Sushi essen.

Geschäftsbeziehungen / Business relationships

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 14 Jahren im Export eines mittelständischen Familienunternehmens und bin 1998 das erste Mal für diese Firma für eine Woche zur Messe nach Düsseldorf mitgefahren. Seitdem sind regelmäßige Messebesuche Pflicht und in den letzten Jahren habe ich diverse Geschäftsreisen unternommen, besonders intensiv seit etwas mehr als einem Jahr.

Und natürlich hatten wir unzählige Besucher in unserer Firma und kennen die meisten unserer Gesprächspartner persönlich.

So sind im Laufe der letzten Jahre auch Freundschaften oder zumindest tiefe Sympathien entstanden. Ich habe zwei liebe Ex-Kolleginnen in China, mit denen ich E-Mails austausche (oder die meinen Blog lesen :-), einen Geschäftspartner in meiner Heimat, den ich in unregelmäßigen Abständen privat besuche und der auch schon bei uns zu Hause war oder zum Beispiel einen amerikanischen Kunden, der nun anläßlich einer Privatreise nach England einen kurzen Abstecher zu uns in die Firma gemacht hat, zusammen mit seiner Frau.

Das hat mich sehr gefreut, denn diesen Geschäftspartner schätze ich sehr und wir pflegen einen guten E-Mail-Verkehr zwischen unseren Büros und lenken uns von unseren alltäglichen (Geschäfts-)Problemen ab. Dass ich nun seine Frau kennenlernen durfte, empfinde ich als große Ehre und so war es fast selbstverständlich, dass wir das Ehepaar nicht nur in unserer Firma empfangen und betreut haben, sondern auch den heutigen Tag mit ihnen verbracht hatten, bis sie wieder nach England zurückgeflogen sind.

Einen kleinen Teil des Tages haben wir in Köln verbracht, bei schönstem Sommerwetter. Ich bin diese Woche das dritte Mal hintereinander sehr spät zu Hause, aber ich möchte diese Tage oder Gelegenheiten nicht missen. Sie sind eine Bereicherung.

I've been working in the export department of a medium-sized and family owned company for more than 14 years and in 1998 I went to an exhibition in Düsseldorf for a week and for the first time. Ever since these visits at various fairs / exhibitions are obligatory and I have been on quite a few business trips in the last years and more intensively for a little more than one year.

And of course we have had countless visitors in our company and we have met most of our business contacts personally.

In the course of the past years even friendships or at least acquaintances resulted from these contacts. I have two lovely ex-colleagues in China with whom I exchange e-mails (or who read my blog :-), a business partner in my home country whom I visit on a private basis from time to time or who had been invited to our home, or for example this American customer who came to visit our company during his private stay with his family in England, together with his wife.

I had been looking forward to this visit because I like this business partner a lot and we exchange e-mails from office to office and distract each other from our everyday (business) problems. It was a great honour for me to be able to meet his wife and it was quite obvious that we not only welcomed and entertained this couple in our company but spent some time with them today until it was time for them to catch their plane back to England.
We have spent part of the day in Cologne and were fortunate enough to have summery weather. It's the third time in a row that I have come back home very late but I do not want to miss these days or occasions. They are an enrichment.

Ich bin heute wieder nach Köln gefahren und mit meiner lieben Freundin und China-Begleiterin Nightglow ins Bastians frühstücken gegangen. Das Bastians ist immer voll und laut, aber die Backwaren sind unglaublich gut.

Mein Frühstück bestand aus schwarzem Kaffee, stillem Wasser, einer Portion Obstsalat mit Joghurt und Honig und Walnüssen und einem Brötchen. Die Brötchen heißen bei Bastians übrigens Prinzen. Dazu habe ich mir noch eine Portion Butter und eine Ecke Camembert bestellt. Diese kleine "Ecke" war so groß, dass ich das alles gar nicht aufessen konnte. Der Obstsalat mit dem Joghurt waren himmlisch.

Eigentlich hatten wir auch vorgehabt, das Wollgeschäft Maschenkunst zu besuchen, standen aber leider und sehr zu meinem Ärger aus Krankheitsgründen vor verschlossener Tür. Hier wäre eine Nachricht im Blog der Inhaberin hilfreich gewesen (wie am Freitag geschehen).

Getrübt wurde meine Heimfahrt von einem Extremstau auf der A1, inklusive Stillstand. Aber pünktlich zum Ende der ersten Halbzeit St. Pauli gegen den BVB war ich wieder zu Hause. Endergebnis 1:3. Nächsten Donnerstag bin ich auch mal wieder im Stadion, in der Euroleague gegen Sevilla.

Today, I went to Cologne again and met up with my lovely friend and Chinese companion Nightglow. We had breakfast at Bastians which is always full and loud but their bakery is fantastic.


My breakfast consisted of black coffee, still water, fruit salad with yoghurt, honey and walnuts and a bread roll. Bastians have named their bread rolls "princes". In addition to that I ordered some butter and a piece of camembert cheese. That piece of camembert was so big that I could not even finish it. The fruit salad with yoghurt was heavenly.

We had also intented to visit the wool shop Maschenkunst but unfortunately all we found was a closed shop due to illness. We would have appreciated a note in the owner's blog (that was the case on Friday).

I got stuck in a major traffic jam on the A1 on my way home, including stillstand, and I arrived close to the end of the first half-time of St. Pauli vs. BVB. Final score 1:3. I'm going to be in the stadium again next Thursday, in the Euroleague game vs. Sevilla.

Ich hatte heute einen freien Tag und verbrachte ihn mit meiner Tochter in Köln. Wir sind heute auch mal wieder den Dom hinaufgestiegen, Stufe für Stufe - insgesamt ca. 550 Treppenstufen.

Zum Abschluß des schönen Tages sind wir chinesisch essen gegangen. Es ist ein chinesischen Lokal, in dem wir heute die einzigen deutschen Besucher waren. Ich war jetzt schon das zweite Mal dort und bin immer noch sehr begeistert von dem guten Essen.

I've had a day off today and spent it in Cologne with my daughter. Today, we also went up the cathedral, step by step - a total of approx. 550 steps.

Our lovely day ended at a Chinese restaurant where we had been the only German visitors today. I've now been twice to this restaurant and love the good food.
