Neues (Strick-) Buch / New (Knitting) Book

***
Tichiro has recently introduced this book and I gladly followed her recommendation:

***

So far it has been published in English only and it contains not only the basics of knitting but other topics like adjusting sizes, finishing touches, shaping a collar and and and. Tichiro describes it as the "basics for advanced knitters" and this fits perfectly.

I am interested specifically in button bands, shaping of shoulders and various top down decreases:

***

I'm currently knitting a v-neck pullover and this book will be extremely helpful. By the way, I'm knitting with 3,25 mm needles - endurance is the word.

Wally Lamb: We Are Water

***

Just finished reading it and again, Wally Lamb managed to stay in my thoughts for days. The book tells a story of a family and its dark past, about a divorce and finding new positions in life. It is full of suspense and well written, a true Lamb novel.

Life on Mars!

***

A lovely friend from HH was in London and visited the David Bowie exhibition in the Victoria & Albert Museum. She was then so nice and wrote such a fantastic report about the exhibition, brought an exhibition catalogue back to Germany and sent it to me.

So many thanks to you, Uncle Neil!

Well, and that was it. I asked my man whether he wanted to go to London for his birthday, booked the flights and the hotel and quickly bought a membership for the V & A (all online tickes are sold out). We will go mid of July.

It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go

But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen

But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show

Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show

Is there life on Mars?

It's on Amerika's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again

See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibeza to the norfolk broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns

But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show

Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show

Is there life on Mars?

Stricken & Lesen / Knitting & Reading

I couldn't get enough of Lysander Rief this weekend, the protagonist of "Waiting for Sunrise". The plot, which begins quite harmless in Vienna, devolops to a first class spy thriller.

I've also finished knitting the right front of my cardigan, the second front part is in progress.

Furthermore, I received a small parcel: the lovely Nightglow has bought 2 skeins of Malabrigo Finito in Ireland and in addition to that she made me a cowl from a beautiful tweed fabric. In my favourite colours as well.

Das sind Schatten von unseren Pflanzen. / These are shadows from our plant.

Der Schal hat auch ein schönes Innenleben. / The cowl is beautiful on the inner side, too.

Von Büchern und Worten / Of Books and Words

***

At the moment I'm lost for words again and don't have much time. This month is very chaotic and the two upcoming business trips to England and the US don't help much either. But I was very happy today to receive some books and I fear that both of them will be read by the time we are off on Christmas holidays.

One of the books is by William Boyd and the other one by Elizabeth George. I have read all books of both authors and ever since I finished reading "Restless" by William Boyd I'm enthralled. The first book I bought by accident was "Brazzaville Beach" and I still keep re-reading it now and then because I love it.

Never mind DI Lynley and Barbara Havers. I have cried tears when Helen died. Many tears. Some of the books don't excite me that much but I do have to read them all.

***

Of course it's only natural that I have thought of buying a Kindle but I have installed the Kindle app on my iPad and it works fine. And frankly speaking I still want to keep some real books in my shelf, for example these childhood memories:

One of the best childrens book: The Stories of the Little Dog and the Little Cat.

Danke Papa.

I am grateful that I can still read these books. My father always insisted on talking in our own mother tongue. Thank you dad.)

Kohlenstaub / Coal Dust

die Autorin / the author

Last night I had been to a book reading in the antiquarian bookshop "Le Chat Qui Lit" in Dortmund. Anne-Kathrin Koppetsch read from her book "Kohlenstaub" (Coal Dust), a historical detective story in the Dortmund of the sixties.

Dortmund 1965: the pastor Martha Gerlach (still called Fräulein in those days) is one of the first female pastors in Dortmund and one Easter Sunday she finds her colleague pastor Hanning dead in his home. Fräulein Martha Gerlach begins to investigate on her own.

The passages which have been read last night made me long for reading more: this is a great story told in typical Ruhr area style and I instantly liked some of the persons involved due to their authenticity, for example the kiosk owner Trudi as well as pastor Martha.

I am now looking forward to reading the book and finding out who killed pastor Hanning.

***

Last week was very demanding. DH had to undergo an operation on Monday and although he has been back at home since Wednesday it will now take a couple of days until he will fully recover and be able to move without pain.)

Ich-Zeit / Me-time

***

I spent the day on my own today, the timing couldn't have been better. I needed this quiet day in order to sort my thoughts and let some news from the past week sink in.

I would have taken a bath in such times of crisis some time ago, but today I went out grocery shopping and baked and cooked. These are the results:

Eine Heidelbeerquiche die wirklich total lecker ist. / A blueberry quiche that is really very delicious.

***

And because it's summer and I urgently needed to be warmed from within I cooked this delicious soup from one of my new Donna Hay cookbooks.

Rote Linsen mit Möhren und Kreuzkümmel. / Red lentils with carrots and cumin.

Schnelle Küche mit Stil von Donna Hay. / The Instant Cook by Donna Hay.

***

I can only recommend this book to people like myself because I am the cook who looks in the fridge and the larder and doesn't know what to make from the contents.

Australisches Wochenende / Australian weekend

So fing der Tag an: / The day began like this:

***

But then it began to rain and it hasn't stopped since. We had a nice breakfast and then I went to the shopping centre in Miranda. I didn't buy too many things but my favourite author is going to entertain me for some time.
