1. Die Kompressionsstrümpfe. Auf Fernflügen ein Muss, ohne sie geht gar nichts. Ich ziehe diese Strümpfe auch auf langen Autofahrten an und habe nie mehr geschwollene Beine. 

1. The compression stockings. A must on long distance flights, I can no longer go without them. I even wear them during long car rides and no longer suffer from swollen legs. 

2. Nivea für die Hände. Ein Erbe meines Vaters, auch er rieb seine Hände mit Nivea ein. 

2. Nivea for the hands. An inheritance from my dad, he used to put Nivea cream on his hands. 

3. Ein großer Thermosbecher, in dem ich mir morgens Früchtetee mache. In allen Hotelzimmern gibt es entweder Wasserkocher oder Kaffeemaschinen (durch die man auch heißes Wasser laufen lassen kann), Teebeutel habe ich immer dabei. So trinke ich morgens genug, habe was dabei und der Hals bleibt warm. 

3. A large thermo mug, in which I make my fruit tea in the mornings. There are hot water kettles orcoffee  machines (in which you can run hot water only) in every hotel room, I have my own tea bags with me. The best way to drink enough in the mornings, have something to drink on the road and keep my throat warm. 

4. Halstuch.

5. Ohne Dany verreise ich nicht. Seit 2010 ist er da, wo ich bin, überall.

6. Ibuprofen. Das Schmerzmittel gegen alles.

7. Mein Strickzeug. Ich weiß gar nicht, wie oft ich schon damit durch alle Sicherheitskontrollen gekommen bin. Es hat noch nie ein Problem gegeben. Nie. Und es verbindet: alle Flugbegleiter möchten wissen, was ich stricke. 

7. My knitting. I can't count the times I have taken this through the security checks. There has never been a problem. Ever. And it connects people: all flight attendants want to know what I'm knitting. 

8. Steckdosenadapter. Geht weltweit. 

8. Plug adapter. Works worldwide. 

9. Passkopie im Koffer.

Das war's. Dann natürlich noch Kreditkarte, Kindle oder Buch und iPad. Und was habt ihr immer dabei? Ohne was kommt  ihr nicht aus? Was wollt ihr nicht vermissen?

Ich wohne übrigens immer gern oben. Je höher desto besser.

Sonntagsspaziergang / Sunday Walk

Fast 7 km! Am Hengsteysee waren wir seit einer Ewigkeit nicht mehr.

Kurzes Lebenszeichen / Short Sign of Life

Ich war ziemlich krank (zusammen mit der halben Bevölkerung Dortmunds). Seit Donnerstag arbeite ich wieder und bin ziemlich beschäftigt. 

Am Montag fliege ich kurzfristig in die USA, für ein paar Tage. Leider sind dort aktuell Temperaturen bis zu minus 10 Grad C.

I have been quite ill (together with half of Dortmund's population) and have been back to work since Thursday and very busy. 

On Monday I'm going to the US on very short notice, for a couple of days only. Unfortunately, they have temperatures up to minus 10 degrees C at the time being. 

Das habe ich letzte Woche gefunden: Einschulung meiner Tochter, mit Dany. / I found this last week: my daughter's first day at school, together with Dany. 

Smoothie

Zur Zeit bin ich mit einer heftigen Erkältung Zuhause. Leider musste ich dafür einige private Termine absagen, u.a. auch den Stadionbesuch am Mittwoch, als BVB gegen Augsburg verlor. Was im Nachhinein also nicht schlimm war. 

Heute habe ich meinen ersten Smoothie gemixt: Mango mit Buttermilch, Zitrone und etwas Müsli. 

Ich kann ihn sehr empfehlen, obwohl ich Buttermilch alleine nie trinken würde.

I am at home with a terrible cold at the moment. Unfortunately I had to cancel some private appointments, amongst others going to the football stadium on Wednesday, when BVB lost against Aufsburg. Which didn't really matter after all. 

Today, I mixed my first smoothie: mango with buttermilk, lemon and some musli. 

Highly recommended though I'd never drink buttermilk on its own. 

Enkel / Grandchildren

Ich vermisse sie ständig, wenn wir uns eine Woche lang nicht sehen, habe ich schon große Sehnsucht.  Sie verändern sich so schnell. Am Sonntag waren wir dort und haben Waffeln gegessen, Spiele gespielt und Jux gemacht.

I miss them all the time, I really long to see them if we haven't met for a week. The change so fast. We were there on Sunday and ate waffles, played games and made fools of ourselves. 

Chinesische Küche / Chinese Cuisine

Mein chinesischer Kollege ist seit Anfang Januar für ein paar Wochen in Deutschland und wir haben uns gestern Abend mit noch zwei anderen Kollegen zum Kochen und Essen verabredet. Geplant waren ein paar wenige Jiaozi (chinesische gefüllte "Klößchen"), geworden sind es ca. 200 (in Worten: zweihundert). 

Eine Hälfte war mit Chinakohl und Mett, die andere mit Bohnen und Mett gefüllt. Wir haben alles selbst zubereitet und als ich die beiden Berge von Teig sah, dachte ich, dass wir nie mehr fertig werden würden. Aber zu fünft geht alles schneller und nach kurzer Zeit waren wir alle meisterlich am "Falten und Füllen". 

Zum Schluss ließ es sich unser Freund des Essens nicht nehmen, noch mal eben eine scharfe Fischsuppe zuzubereiten. Da habe ich es aber nicht mehr geschafft aufzustehen, um ein Foto zu machen. 

Mein lieber Kollege: es war herrlich! (Und ich bin für drei Tage mit Essen versorgt.)

My Chinese colleague is currently in Germany since the beginning of January and last night we met up to cook and dine together with two other colleagues. We had planned to make a couple of Jiaozi (Chinese filled dumplings), we actually made approx. 200 (in words: two hundred). 

One half was filled with Chinese cabbage and minced meat, the other one with beans and meat. We made everything from scratch and when I saw those two mountains of dough I thought the preparations would never end. But there were five of us and after a short while everybody was busy "folding and filling". 

We couldn't keep our chef from making a hot fish soup later in the evening and I'm afraid I was too stuffed in order to get up and shoot a photo. 

My dear colleague, it was fantastic! (And I have plenty of food for three days.)

Emery - (Ich stricke noch! / I'm Still Knitting!)

Ich glaube ich habe schon länger nichts über meine Strickprojekte geschrieben, wahrscheinlich weil ich etwas in Nadelstärke 3,25 mm auf den Nadeln habe, was wohl noch etwas länger dauern wird. 

Aber ich habe das Rückenteil fast fertig und die letzten Fotos des Projektes sind diese hier:

I think I haven't written about knitting for a while, perhaps because I'm currently busy with 3,25 mm knitting needles which will take a while to finish. 

But the back is almost ready and the last pics of the project are these:

Ich mag fast alles von Brooklyn Tweed und insbesondere Michele Wang, ihre Modelle sind schön und sehr gut ausgearbeitet, die Anleitungen einwandfrei. 

Mal sehen, wann ich fertig sein werde. Wahrscheinlich im Hochsommer. 😎

I like almost everything from Brooklyn Tweed and especially from Michele Wang, her models are beautiful and well designed, the patterns flawless. 

We'll see when I'll finish it, probably in the middle of summer. 😎

After Eight

Gestern waren wir bei Freunden eingeladen und ich habe im Netz nach einem Mitbringel aus der Küche gesucht. Dabei fiel mir das Rezept für den After Eight Likör auf. Ich finde es toll, dass es diese Pfefferminz-Plättchen noch gibt und immer noch ist jedes Teilchen einzeln verpackt. Irgendwie auch niedlich. Der Likör war ganz fix fertig, Rezept siehe unten.

Yesterday we were invited at our friends' and I had been searching the net for something to bring along, preferably home made. The After Eight liquor seemed to be the perfect thing. I'm astonished that these peppermint plates are still around and even today, every single plate has its own wrapping. It's cute. The liquor was ready in seconds, recipe below. 

200 ml hiervon / 200 ml of this

300 g davon / 300 g of that

50 g Zucker und 400 ml Sahne / 50 g sugar and 400 ml cream

Den Zucker mit Sahne mixen, After Eight hinzufügen und bei niedriger Temperatur (30 Grad) schmelzen, Korn dazu und fertig. (Ich habe es im Thermomix gemacht und die Minzplättchen vorher klein gehackt.)

Mix the sugar with cream, add After Eight and let it melt at low temperature (30 degrees), then add the corn schnapps et voila. (I made this in the Thermomix and crushed the mints before melting them.)

Schnee! / Snow!

Ich bin nur froh, dass das kein Montag Morgen war. Und mittlerweile taut es wieder.

I'm glad this didn't happen on a Monday morning. And in the meantime, it's thawing again.

Neues (Strick-) Buch / New (Knitting) Book

Tichiro hatte es neulich vorgestellt und ich bin dieser Empfehlung gerne gefolgt:

Tichiro has recently introduced this book and I gladly followed her recommendation:

Es ist bisher nur auf Englisch erschienen und beinhaltet nicht nur Grundbegriffe des Strickens sondern alle anderen Themen zur Größenanpassung, Ausarbeitung, Gestaltung eines Kragens und und und. Tichiro bezeichnet es als das "Grundlagenbuch für Fortgeschrittene", womit sie völlig richtig liegt. 

Mich interessieren insbesondere Knopflöcher, Schulterschrägen und diverse RVO Formen:

So far it has been published in English only and it contains not only the basics of knitting but other topics like adjusting sizes, finishing touches, shaping a collar and and and. Tichiro describes it as the "basics for advanced knitters" and this fits perfectly. 

I am interested specifically in button bands, shaping of shoulders and various top down decreases:

Zur Zeit stricke ich einen Zopfmuster Pullover mit V-Ausschnitt und dabei wird dieses Buch äußerst hilfreich sein. Ich stricke übrigens mit Nadelstärke 3,25 - Ausdauer ist gefragt.

I'm currently knitting a v-neck pullover and this book will be extremely helpful. By the way, I'm knitting with 3,25 mm needles - endurance is the word. 

Feuerwerk / Fireworks

Beinahe hätte ich es verpasst, das Feuerwerk im Westfalenpark, denn die Ausstellung Winterleuchten sollte eigentlich schon letzten Samstag beendet werden. Aber durch den heftigen Sturm ist alles auf gestern verschoben worden und so sind wir kurzfristig mit Freunden hingefahren. 

Das Wetter war super, sehr kalt, trocken und klar. Der Park war sehr voll.

I almost missed the fireworks in the Westfalenpark as the exhibition Winterleuchten (winter illumination) was supposed to end last Saturday. Due to the heavy storms all was postponed until yesterday and we met up with friends on short notice. 

The weather was great, very cold and clear. The park was full.
