Teils traurig, teils fröhlich / Partly Sad, Partly Cheerful

Meine Tante in Australien ist heute in den frühen Morgenstunden nach längerer Krankheit verstorben. Möge sie in Frieden ruhen. Sie war die Frau des jüngeren Bruders meines Vaters. Ihre beiden Töchter und deren Kinder leben alle in Australien und ich hoffe, dass ich sie im Sommer wiedersehen kann.

My aunt from Australia has passed away in the early morning hours today, she had been ill for some for quite a while, may she rest in peace. She was the wife of my father's younger brother. Her two daughters and their children all live in Australia and I'm hoping to see them again in the summer. 

Und dann waren diese kleinen Racker hier und haben alles auf den Kopf gestellt.

Comedy, Stricken und Fußball / Comedy, Knitting and Football

Gestern waren wir im Dortmunder Olpketaltheater und haben uns von "Günna" aka Bruno Knust bespassen lassen. Ruhrpott comedy vom Feinsten.

Last night we went out to a comedy show at the Theatre Olpketal, to see the famous local comedian Bruno Knust. Local comedy at its best. 

Ansonsten habe ich viel Champions League Fußball geschaut und eine Menge gestrickt.

Apart from that I've watched a lot of Champions League football matches and knitted quite a lot. 

     

Das Tuch wird nach der zweiten Strickmich Club Anleitung gestrickt, hierzu demnächst mehr.

The pattern for this shawl is from the second Strickmich Club shipment, I'll post more about this later. 

Dieses Tuch stricke ich aus einer Wollmeise nach dem gleichen Muster, zusätzlich mit den schönen Swarovski Glaselementen. Am liebsten hätte ich es schon fertig, das wird mein Liebling werden.

I'm knitting this shawl with wool from Wollmeise acc. to the same pattern, and added these beautiful Swarovski glass elements. I wish it were ready now, it'll be my favourite. 

Ein Hitchhiker / A Hitchhiker

Während der letzten Dienstreise sind wir viel unterwegs gewesen und so hatte ich immer wieder Gelegenheit, ein paar Reihen zu stricken. Und das ist darus geworden, ein neuer Hitchhiker:

Am Dortmund-Ems-Kanal / At the Dortmund-Ems-Canal

Heute haben wir am Dortmund--Ems-Kanal eine kleine Radtour gemacht. Zum Teil war es so windig, dass wir (meine Mama und ich) die Rückreise etwas eher angetreten haben als geplant. DH ist bis nach Henrichenburg gefahren und kam später nach. 

Mein Vater ist schon in Šternberk, er ist nämlich letzten Mittwoch mit seinem Rad mit der Bahn nach Dresden gefahren und von dort ca. 400 km nach Šternberk geradelt. Zur Erinnerung: er ist 79 Jahre alt.

Today we cycled along the Dortmund-Ems-Canal. It was so windy that we (my mum and I) went back earlier than planned. DH went to Henrichenburg and joined us later. 

My father is already in Šternberk, he took his bike and went to Dresden by train and then cycled the approx. 400 km to Šternberk. Just to remind you: he is 79 years old. 

Wenn ich nicht zu Hause bin / When I'm not at Home

... verschönt mein Gatte unser Heim. Diesmal war es der Abstellraum (unser Kabuff), in dem die Schuhe, Putzzeug, Staubsauger, Altpapier, Flaschen etc. nicht sehr ordentlich gelagert wurden. 

Und das hat er daraus gemacht:

Mit dem Zug in China / On the Train in China

Es sieht voll und unorganisiert aus, ist es aber nicht. / It may look full and unorganised but it's not. 

Quingdao: Warteraum / waiting room

An jedem Bahnhof muss man durch eine Gepäckkontrolle wie am Flughafen, holt sich dann das elektronisch vorbestellte Ticket am Schalter ab (viele Menschen aber viele Schalter und es geht relativ zügig) und begibt sich dann in einen großen Warteraum (siehe oben), wo man aber immer einen Sitzplatz findet. Ca.  20 Minuten vor der geplanten Abfahrt des Zuges beginnt die Einlaßkontrolle (auch hier: viele Menschen aber eine sehr schnelle Abfertigung) und man begibt sich zum Bahnsteig.

Am Rande des Bahnsteigs sind die Abteilnummern aufgemalt und hier kann man sich anstellen und sicher sein, dass der Zug mit seinen Abteilen und Türen punktgenau an diesen Markierungen hält. Die Höhe der Eingänge und der Bahnsteige sind genau aufeinander abgestimmt, d.h. man kann Rollstühle und Koffer auf gleicher Ebene hinein- und herausrollen (warum geht das bitte nicht in Deutschland?). 

Ich bin in China mit unseren Kollegen sehr häufig mit dem Zug unterwegs (allein auf der letzten Dienstreise sechs Mal), habe aber noch nie auch nur eine Minute Verspätung gehabt. Die Zugabteile werden regelmäßig sauber gehalten (während der Fahrt wird mehrmals gewischt oder gekehrt), oft kommt jemand zum Mülleinsammeln vorbei und der Gang zur Toilette ist auch kein Horror. 

Für jedes ausgestellte Ticket gibt es eine kleine kostenlose Flasche Wasser und in jedem Zugwaggon kann man seinen Teebehälter mit heißem Wasser nachfüllen.

There is a luggage check at very train station, similar to the ones at an airport. You can then pick up your train ticket at the ticket counter which can be ordered online (many people but also many ticket counters and it's relatively quick) and go to the big waiting room, where you'll almost always be able to find a seat. Admission to the platforms begins approx. 20 min. before the scheduled departure of the train (again: many people but fast admission). 

The platforms are marked with the numbers of each compartment and you can wait here and be sure that the train with all its compartments and doors stops precisely at these markings. The heights of the platforms and doors are on one level, hence you can easily move wheelchairs and suitcases in and out (why can't this be the case in Germany?). 

I travel a lot by train when I'm in China (six times alone during this last business trip) and I've never seen a train being late. The compartments are being cleaned regularly (they are being swept during the ride), someone keeps collecting the waste and going to the toilet is not a horrible experience. 

There is a small bottle of water free of charge for every ticket issued and on the train you can fill up your tea pot with hot water.

Qingdao

Das Wochenende haben wir in Qingdao verbracht, einer zeitweise deutschen Stadt am Meer. Es gibt hier noch zahlreiche deutsche Geböude und Villen und eine gut erhaltene Kirche. Und jede Menge gutes Tsingtao Bier.

We spent the weekend in Qingdao, a city at the seaside which belonged to Germany for some time. There are quite a few German buildings and villas and a well kept church. And lots of Tsingtao beer.

Und mitten in der Nacht das fantastische 3:0 gegen Bayern München. Dafür bin ich aufgeblieben, zum Glück hat es sich gelohnt. Und wieder einmal Danke an den chinesischen Sportsender.

Then there was that fantastic 3:0 vs. Bayern Munich in the middle if the night. I stayed awake and it was well worth it. Again, thanks to the Chinese sports TV.
