Ich habe es endlich geschafft: am Montag habe ich - wenn auch nur ganz kurz - den Weihnachtsbaum bewundert. / I have finally succeeded in admiring the Christmas tree last Monday, if only for a short moment.

Den kleinen Engeln geht es wieder allen gut. Der Jüngste ist jetzt ein fröhliches und zufriedenes Baby und der größere Bruder hat uns heute nur zum Lachen gebracht.

Und dann ist da noch der 1. Ärmel, der jetzt fertig ist. Ich habe die Jacke provisorisch zusammengenäht, um die Länge des Ärmels zu begutachten. Paßt perfekt.

Der Schnee ist wieder geschmolzen, es regnet und morgen soll es 10 °C werden. Kaum zu glauben, dass ich noch nicht ein einziges Mal auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt war und den Baum nicht gesehen habe. Also mache ich hier weihnachtliche Stimmung.

The snow has melted, it's raining and tomorrow it is supposed to be 10 °C. Hard to believe that I have not yet visited the Christmas market, nor have I seen the Christmas tree yet. Time to create a more christmassy atmosphere in here.

First of all thanks for all your get well wishes and comments. We are all on the mend again. I can now make myself halfway understandable, the barking the coughing is decreasing considerably.

Ein schönes Schauspiel vor unserem Fenstern heute morgen. Den Sinn habe ich nicht ganz verstanden, der Feuerwehrmann hat nur die Satelittenantennen des hinteren Hauses eingesammelt. Dafür kam ein großer Feuerwehrwagen und blockierte eine Straße. Der Autofahrer, dem das nicht gefiel, hat sich lautstark hupend bemerkbar gemacht. Mehre Minuten lang.

An interesting sight from our windows this morning. I did not quite get the meaning as the fireman has only disassembled the satelite antennae from the rear house. A big fire engine came up the street and blocked it for a while. There was one driver who did not like this obviously, he made himself noticeable by sounding his horn aggressively. For several minutes.

Einen Maschenmarkierer braucht man übrigens zum Stricken und das liegt seit einer Woche völlig brach. Ich konnte nur husten, Tee trinken, Tee wegbringen, etwas lesen und meistens nur liegen.

A stitch marker is needed for knitting and that has been pretty much neglected for a week. I was only able to cough, drink tea, bring back some tea, read a little oder lie down most of the time.

Das ist nicht unser Dezember. So gar nicht.

Nachdem mein kleines Enkelkind am Mittwoch erfolgreich operiert worden ist, kehrte es am Donnerstag heim und am Freitag wieder ins Krankenhaus zurück. Mittlerweile sind weitere Komplikationen oder mögliche Krankheiten ausgeschlossen und es ist hoffentlich "nur" Magen-Darm.

Magen-Darm haben jetzt auch meine Tochter und das ältere Enkelkind.

Ich habe zwar kein Magen-Darm, aber ich kann keinen Satz zu Ende sprechen, ohne in ein ohrenbetäubendes Bellen - sprich Husten - auszubrechen. Damit hat sich die für Morgen anstehende Dienstreise in die USA erledigt und ich werde weiterhin das tun, was ich seit Freitag Mittag mache: das Bett hüten und literweise Früchtetee trinken.

Ich wünsche meinen Enkelkindern, meiner Tochter und mir gute Besserung. Es kann nur noch besser werden.

This is not the most beautiful December we have ever had. By far not.

After my little grandson had been operated on Wednesday, he returned back home on Thursday only to have to return back to the hospital on Friday. In the meantime all possible complications or illnesses have been ruled out and it is hopefully "only" stomach flu.

Stomach flu is also what my daughter and the older grandson are suffering from.

I don't suffer from stomach flu but I cannot speak a whole sentence without eardeafening barking - read: coughing. My business trip to the US has been cancelled and I will continue doing what I have been doing from Friday on: stay in bed and drink countless litres of fruit tea.

I hope that my little grandschildren, my daughter and I will get well soon. This can only get better.

Die Taufe / The Christening

Heute wurde unser zweites Enkelkind getauft. Nach der Kirche trafen sich die zwei Familien und einige Freunde meiner Tochter zum Brunch. Es war eine schöne Feier.

Our second grandson was christened today. After the church ceremony the two families and some friends of my daughter met for brunch. It was a nice celebration.

Ich lerne / I'm learning

Im Moment vernachlässige ich meinen Blog sehr. Das hat meistens schwer wiegende Gründe: entweder mir fehlen Worte, ich mag über das Geschehene nicht schreiben oder es passiert einfach zu viel. Zur Zeit ist es eine explosive Mischung aus allem.

Nachdem mein Mann also seine Operation gut überstanden hat und mittlerweile wieder (fast) voll einsatzfähig ist, wird nächste Woche mein kleines 2 Monate altes Enkelkind operiert. Es ist ein Standardeingriff und es wird ihm danach wesentlich besser gehen - das ist unser Mantra. Meine Gedanken sind Tag und Nacht bei der jungen Familie.

Morgen ist übrigens die Taufe des Babys.

I'm really neglecting my blog at the time being. Usually, the reasons are that I'm lost for words or that I don't want to write about something or that there is too much happening. At the moment, it is an explosive mixture of everything.

Now that my husband has overcome his surgery well and is (almost) fit again, our little two months old grandson is going to be operated next week. It's a standard procedure and he will be much better afterwards - this is our mantra. My thoughts are with the young family, day and night.

The baby will be christened tomorrow.

Weihnachtsbäckerei / Christmas Baking

Auch in diesem Jahr habe ich mir vorgenommen, nicht schon wieder nur die altbekannten (aber bewährten) Vanillekipferl zu machen. Die Ausstechform für die Linzer Plätzchen hatte ich schon seit letzter Woche und heute bin ich zur Tat geschritten.

Ergebnis: 25 Stück, nur. Das Fluchen während der Teigbearbeitung ist unbeschreiblich. Dieser Teig ging gar nicht. Irgendwann war ich das mühevolle Ausrollen des Teigs so leid, dass ich aufgab.

Sie schmecken hervorragend!

It's been already decided that I would not make the well known (but approved) vanilla croissants all over again this year. I've already had the biscuit cutter for the Linzer biscuits for a week and today was the day.

Result: 25 pieces, only. I cannot describe the swearing during the processing of the dough. It was useless. I was soon fed up with the painstaking rolling out of the dough and gave up.

They are delicious!

Stricken & Lesen / Knitting & Reading

Dieses Wochenende konnte ich nicht genug bekommen von Lysander Rief, dem Protagonisten aus "Waiting for Sunrise". Die Handlung beginnt recht harmlos in Wien und entwickelt sich zu einem Spionagethriller erster Klasse.

Gestrickt habe ich auch, das rechte Vorderteil der Strickjacke ist fertig und das zweite in Arbeit.

Dazu kam gestern noch Post für mich: die liebe Nightglow hat mir aus Irland 2 Stränge Malabrigo Finito mitgebracht und dazu hat sich noch aus einem schönen Tweedstoff einen Schal genäht. Und das alles in meinen Farben.

I couldn't get enough of Lysander Rief this weekend, the protagonist of "Waiting for Sunrise". The plot, which begins quite harmless in Vienna, devolops to a first class spy thriller.

I've also finished knitting the right front of my cardigan, the second front part is in progress.

Furthermore, I received a small parcel: the lovely Nightglow has bought 2 skeins of Malabrigo Finito in Ireland and in addition to that she made me a cowl from a beautiful tweed fabric. In my favourite colours as well.

Von Büchern und Worten / Of Books and Words

Zur Zeit fehlen mir mal wieder Worte und auch Zeit. Dieser Monat ist furchtbar stressig und die nahenden Dienstreisen nach England und in die USA tragen nicht viel zur Entspannung bei. Ich freue mich aber über eine Büchersendung, die heute bei mir eingetroffen ist, und fürchte, dass beide Bücher nicht bis zu den Weihnachtsferien ungelesen bleiben.

Das eine Buch ist von William Boyd und das andere von Elizabeth George. Von beiden habe ich bisher jedes Buch gelesen und insbesondere William Boyd hat mich spätestens seit dem Buch "Restless" restlos begeistert. "Brazzaville Beach" war das erste Buch, das mir irgendwo zufällig in die Hände gefallen ist und das ich heute noch zwischendurch mal wieder lese, weil ich es liebe.

Von DI Lynley und Barbara Havers ganz zu schweigen. Ich habe Tränen vergossen, als Helen starb. Viele Tränen. Bei manchem Buch hält sich meine Begeisterung in Grenzen, aber lesen muss ich sie alle.

At the moment I'm lost for words again and don't have much time. This month is very chaotic and the two upcoming business trips to England and the US don't help much either. But I was very happy today to receive some books and I fear that both of them will be read by the time we are off on Christmas holidays.

One of the books is by William Boyd and the other one by Elizabeth George. I have read all books of both authors and ever since I finished reading "Restless" by William Boyd I'm enthralled. The first book I bought by accident was "Brazzaville Beach" and I still keep re-reading it now and then because I love it.

Never mind DI Lynley and Barbara Havers. I have cried tears when Helen died. Many tears. Some of the books don't excite me that much but I do have to read them all.

Es liegt natürlich auch sehr nahe, dass ich schon über den Kauf eines Kindle nachgedacht habe. Aber mit einer Kindle-App auf dem iPad geht's auch und ganz ehrlich, so manches Buch möchte ich für immer im Regal stehen haben. Zum Beispiel diese Kindheitserinnerungen:

Of course it's only natural that I have thought of buying a Kindle but I have installed the Kindle app on my iPad and it works fine. And frankly speaking I still want to keep some real books in my shelf, for example these childhood memories:

Eines der schönsten Kinderbücher überhaupt: Die Geschichten vom Hund und dem Kätzchen. / One of the best childrens book: The Stories of the Little Dog and the Little Cat.

(Ich bin dankbar, dass ich diese Bücher noch lesen kann. Mein Vater bestand immer darauf, dass zu Hause gesprochen wird "wie einem der Schnabel gewachsen ist". Danke Papa.

I am grateful that I can still read these books. My father always insisted on talking in our own mother tongue. Thank you dad.)

Kohlenstaub / Coal Dust

Gestern Abend war ich zu einer Lesung im Antiquariat "Le Chat Qui Lit" in Dortmund. Anne-Kathrin Koppetsch las aus ihrem Buch "Kohlenstaub", einem historischen Kriminalroman aus dem Dortmund der sechziger Jahre.

Dortmund 1965: die Pastorin Martha Gerlach (damals noch Fräulein genannt) ist eine der ersten Pastorinnen in Dortmund und findet am Ostersonntag ihren Kollegen Pastor Hanning tot in seinem Pfarrhaus vor. Fräulein Martha Gerlach fängt auf eigene Faust an zu ermitteln.

Die gestern vorgelesenen Passagen haben großen Appetit auf das Buch gemacht: hier wird eine gute Story auf "ruhrpöttisch" erzählt und manche Personen hat man wegen ihrer Authentitizität sofort lieb gewonnen. Kioskbesitzerin Trudi ist so ein Original, ebenso ist mir die Pastorin Martha auf Anhieb sympathisch.

Ich freue mich schon darauf, das Buch selbst zu lesen und zu erfahren, wer denn nun Pastor Hanning umgebracht hat.

Last night I had been to a book reading in the antiquarian bookshop "Le Chat Qui Lit" in Dortmund. Anne-Kathrin Koppetsch read from her book "Kohlenstaub" (Coal Dust), a historical detective story in the Dortmund of the sixties.

Dortmund 1965: the pastor Martha Gerlach (still called Fräulein in those days) is one of the first female pastors in Dortmund and one Easter Sunday she finds her colleague pastor Hanning dead in his home. Fräulein Martha Gerlach begins to investigate on her own.

The passages which have been read last night made me long for reading more: this is a great story told in typical Ruhr area style and I instantly liked some of the persons involved due to their authenticity, for example the kiosk owner Trudi as well as pastor Martha.

I am now looking forward to reading the book and finding out who killed pastor Hanning.





(Die letzte Woche war sehr anspruchsvoll. DH musste sich am Montag einer Operation unterziehen und ist seit Mittwoch wieder daheim, es wird jedoch noch ein paar Tage dauern, bis er vollständig genesen ist und sich ohne Schmerzen bewegen kann.

Last week was very demanding. DH had to undergo an operation on Monday and although he has been back at home since Wednesday it will now take a couple of days until he will fully recover and be able to move without pain.)

Hier habe ich noch nie gesessen. Am Donnerstag ergab es sich ganz überraschend, dass ich eine Sitzplatzkarte für das Spiel gegen Stuttgart kaufen konnte. Leider erfüllte das Spiel mit einem enttäuschenden 0:0 nicht meine Erwartungen.

I have never sat here before. On Thursday, I was offered a seat ticket for the match vs. Stuttgart. Unfortunately, the match did not live up to my expectations with its disappointing 0:0.

So viel Leben in der Bude / Things are Livened up

Wenn wir uns heutzutage bei meinen Eltern treffen, sind wir auf einmal acht: meine Tochter mit ihrem Mann und ihren zwei Söhnen, meine Eltern und DH und ich. Das erscheint mir unglaublich, aber ich genieße es.

Eigentlich sollten wir neun sein.

When we meet at my parents these days, there are eight of us all of the sudden: my daughter and her husband and their two sons, my parents and DH and I. Unbelievable somehow, but I enjoy it.
