Wo kommst Du her? / Where are you from?

Diese Frage wird uns mittlerweile mehrmals am Tag gestellt. Wir sind viel unterwegs, fliegen hin und her und unterhalten uns natürlich auf Deutsch. Und genauso natürlich kommen die Leute zu uns und fragen uns, wo wir herkommen. Aus Germany! Es folgen zum Teil sehr interessante Reaktionen und manchmal entwickeln sich daraus kurze, aber immer freundliche Gespräche.

Heute sind wir von St. Louis nach Bristol, Virginia geflogen und meinem Kollegen ging es unterwegs aufgrund einer plötzlichen Erkrankung ziemlich schlecht. Als wir in Charlotte in einen sehr kleinen Flieger umgestiegen sind, war die Flugbegleiterin nicht nur sehr um meinen Kollegen besorgt, sie kam auch immer wieder zu uns, um uns auf deutsch zu erzählen, dass sie einen deutschen Freund hat und wie sehr sie Deutschland mag und wo sie schon überall war. Really amazing. (Meinem Kollegen geht es übrigens wieder gut.)

Einige Leute erzählen uns von ihren deutschen Vorfahren, eine Frau, die uns in einem Supermarkt mitten in Nirgendwo bediente, war mit ihrem amerikanischen Mann in Deutschland stationiert, einige möchten einfach nur wissen, welche Sprache wir sprechen.

Ich finde es nett, wir lassen uns auf diese Gespräche gern ein.

In the meantime, we'd been hearing this question quite a few times per day. We are always on the move, fly a lot and of course we talk in German all the time. And almost naturally, some people approach us and ask us where we are from. From Germany! Followed by some very interesting reactions and sometimes we exchange a few short but always friendly sentences.

Today, we flew from St. Louis to Bristol, Virginia and my colleage felt very sick due to a sudden illness. When we changed flights in Charlotte, the flight attendant was not only worried about my colleague but she welcomed every possibility to talk in German and let us know that she has a German boyfriend and how much she likes Germany and where she had been already. Really amazing. (By the way, my colleague is well again.)

Some people talk about their German ancestors, a woman who worked at the cashier of a supermarket in the middle of nowhere told us about being stationed in Germany with her American husband, some of them only want to know which language we are speaking.

I think it's very friendly, we like to talk to all those people.
