Do you remember? / Saturday Nite / Jupiter

Das alles sind Songtitel von Earth, Wind & Fire. Habt ihr sie erkannt? Ich war gerade etwas über 18 Jahre alt, als meine Freundin Canada Dry und ich diese fantastische Gruppe in der Grugahalle Essen live gesehen haben. Da ich schon im Besitz eines Führerscheins war (Mobilität war das Stichwort meines Vaters) und leihweise das Ungetüm, das sich Ford Granada nannte, fahren durfte, kutschierte ich uns beide nach Essen und zurück. Zu meiner Scham erinnere ich mich ganz schwach an diverse Rangierarbeiten auf dem Parkplatz, aber das ist eine andere Story. Das Konzert war ein solcher Erfolg, den man wohl im Nachhinein daran erkennt, daß wir heute noch unablässig und immer wieder gerne von diesem Tanzabend schwärmen. Die Show, die Bläser, die Gruppe, der Groove, all das war schier unbeschreiblich, cool und funky. Und die Klamotten der Stars: schrill, glänzend, extravagant und sehr sehr stylish. Ich denke oft darüber nach, wie ich eine eigene Disco gestalten würde, welche Leute sich dort tummeln und natürlich, welche MUSIK dort gespielt wird. Das Eröffnungslied eines jeden Abends ist „Jupiter“ von Earth, Wind & Fire, zusammen mit dem Vorspann „In the Marketplace“ (kleiner Tip am Rande: natürlich öffnet die Disco um 20 Uhr und natürlich wird spätestens ab 20.30 Uhr getanzt, wer von uns hält schon bis nach Mitternacht aus, um DANN erst auszugehen?). Im Laufe des Abends wird von Earth, Wind & Fire noch „Serpentine Fire“ und „In the Stone“ gespielt, auf Anfrage natürlich noch mehr, wie zum Beispiel das himmlische „Saturday Nite“. Das Schlußlied der Nacht ist die all-time-favourite Hymne „I Will Survive“ von Gloria Gaynor und gerne dürfen bei mir im Club auch Travestiestars auftreten (von meinem anderen Lieblingsclub erzähle ich ein anderes Mal). All diese Gedanken beschäftigten mich heute auf dem Nachhauseweg im Auto, dazu liefen die oben erwähnten Songs. Ich hätte bis nach Süditalien fahren können ...

I was just a bit more than 18 years old when my friend Canada Dry and I saw this fantastic group live in the Grugahalle in Essen. As I already had my driving licence (mobility being my father's cue) I was allowed to drive that vehemence of a car which called itself Ford Granada to Essen and back. Much to my shame I dimly recall some various parking problems in the car park but that's another story). The concert was a success that can only be recognized as such in retrospect because we incessantly keep raving over this dance party. The show, the horns, the group, the groove, all this was undescribable, cool and funky. And the outfits of the stars: shrill, shining, extravagant and very very stylish. I often think of designing my own discotheque, of the partying people and of course which MUSIC would be played there. The opening song of every evening is „Jupiter“ by Earth, Wind & Fire, together with the intro „In the Marketplace“ (small hint here: of course the discotheque opens at 8 pm and of course people would dance latest at 8.30 pm, how many of us can stay up until midnight and go out later then that?). In the course of the evening further songs will be played by Earth, Wind & Fire, such as „Serpentine Fire“ and „In the Stone“, more on demand, for example the heavenly „Saturday Nite“. The final song of the night is the all-time-favourite hymn „I Will Survive“ by Gloria Gaynor and I'd be happy to have some travesty stars performing in my club (which reminds me of another favourite club but I'll come back to this some other time).
